Continuing a tradition of presenting images of things that no longer exist, here is an old postcard of the Savage Rapids Dam in Southern Oregon.
For a contrasting view, check out images of the site with the dam removed along with a history of the struggle to have the dam removed at the Waterwatch website.
Whether the river will be completely restored to its former healthy status or whether this will greatly improve salmon numbers is also debatable. Looking at how dams were once viewed as a sign of progress and a means of taming nature to viewing them as a blight on the natural surrounding is a large paradigm shift. It begs the question, what will be the next structure people will want removed from the environment.
